| ART INCONTRO SICILIA
is an 18 day program of creative workshops and touring, exploring
south-eastern Sicily and Palermo through its visual and written culture.
The program is designed for people with an interest in visual art,
Italian culture and a desire to find time and inspiration for their
own creative projects. |
| The setting for ART
INCONTRO SICILIA is Siracusa (Syracuse),
the city that once rivalled Athens as the most important cultural
centre in the Greek world. Situated on the scenic Ionian coast and
graced with two natural harbours, Siracusa presents a fascinating
hybrid of baroque, classical and prehistoric layers. |
| Our home in Siracusa is the beguiling
island of Ortigia, the cultural and historic heart of the city. Despite
its grand baroque and Catalan architecture, Ortigia is an intimate
and enchanting place. The centres crumbling facades are framed
by beautiful wrought-iron balconies and the largely pedestrian streets
invite aimless wandering and quiet reflection. As a contrast, the
program ends with four days and nights in the Sicilian capital, Palermo.
Once boasting the most multicultural population in Europe, Palermo
is an intriguing maze of Moorish alleys and sumptuous Arab-Norman
architecture. |
|
| ART INCONTRO SICILIA
is flexible, relaxed and designed to foster each participants
creative interests. Highlights include a train journey around Europes
largest volcano, Mount Etna; excursions to the ancient sites of Pantalica
and Palazzolo Acreide; opportunities to explore the architectural
jewels of Noto, Catania and Palermo; visits to artisan workshops,
local markets, museums and galleries and time for your own artwork.
You can try everything or pursue a particular aspect of the program.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS
Our exploration of Sicily begins with books and reading. Before
departure, participants will receive a selection of writing that
has been inspired by the region. The anthology will include fiction,
essays, poetry, biography, history, fairytales and recipes.
A series of drawing and printmaking sessions
have been built into the program to provide an opportunity to record
impressions, share ideas and develop skills. The sessions incorporate
drawing field trips and structured printmaking workshops. These
sessions are flexible to accommodate different levels of experience
and creative approaches and will encourage experimentation with
ideas and media. Alternatively, you may use these sessions to pursue
your own self-directed creative project.

|
|
| To inspire you further, the practical
art making is complemented by visits to a selection of artisan workshops,
contemporary arts spaces, museums, markets and archaeological sites.
